21-Year-Old Guy Starts Hydroponics Farming Business with Php1k Capital

Many people think that you need a lot of money, possibly at least a hundred thousand pesos to start a business. Yet a 21-year-old guy starts a hydroponics farming business with just Php1k capital.

Harold Zapata’s grandfather, a farmer, often discouraged him from becoming one. In a country where so many farmers are poor, he thought that being a farmer also means being poor.

Mag-iiinhinyero ka. Hindi ka magsasaka. Parang tumatak na sa utak niya na talagang ‘pag farmer is farmer lang,” he recalled.

But it seems that farming is really in Harold’s blood. And he wanted to show appreciation to farmers, knowing that we can’t have food without them.

He got interested in hydroponics farming. One summer, he began to build a greenhouse to start hydroponics farming, a type of farming where plants are grown on water, not soil.

Using a capital of Php1k and discarded Styrofoam boxes he asked from friends in the market, he started his business.

At the time, the greenhouse was small and could handle just around 80 heads of lettuce. Little by little, he was able to grow his greenhouse and his business, so that he now earns Php15,000 from these crops.

It’s a hobby that became a good source of income for the young man. Aside from earning from the crops, he also earns from selling seedlings, constructing greenhouses, and consultation services.

He advises everyone to enjoy their hobby but also do research.

  2. Hi, can you help me, I have a 7,000sqm farm lot, should I use it for traditional farming or convert it to hydroponics greenhouse? I found and read this online, https://digitalpaycheque.com/hydroponics-online-business-start-with-these/ and there are lots of advantage of hydroponics. What can you suggest? Thanks.
