1. Mercury Drug’s Mariano Que

Before World War II, Mariano Que was a drug store employee. After the war, he grabbed the opportunity when he says the need for sulfa drugs.

What fueled his business is the right timing, he grabbed the opportunity when he knew there was a great demand of what he can supply.

2. National Bookstore’s Socorro C. Ramos

Socorro Ramos or better known as Nanay Coring worked as an employee in the iconic Bookwill Bookstore found in Escolta. When she married Jose Ramos, they rented a small corner space at the foot of Escolta bridge, they sold textbooks, novels, and other school supplies. The corner was burned down in 1945, rebuilt and was struck by a typhoon 3 years later. The couple did not stop there.

What fueled their business is the determination to go on despite calamities and the investment of business in the things they are already knowledgeable of.

3. Jollibee’s Tony Tan Caktiong

At age 22, Tony Tan Caktiong ventured into the franchising business. He started with two ice cream parlor franchises of Magnolia Dairy Ice. But soon after that, after listening to the customer’s requests, he started offering hot meals and sandwiches. These became more popular than the ice cream, after three years, he discontinued the ice cream franchise and started his full-blown fast food outlets.

What fueled his business is his willingness to listen to people’s feedback and making sure he delivers it to them.
