Ellen Amila Mante, the owner of Amila Duck Farm in Pilar, Bohol, shared her inspirations and business success story.
In an episode of Agripreneur via Youtube channel, Ellen said that starting a duck farm is a very sustainable business venture. Duck farming is not only profitable, but it also helps vendors with their own businesses and creates jobs.
According to Ellen, she started duck farming because she was looking for a business that would thrive even amid the pandemic. She soon came to the conclusion that raising “seho,” or ducklings, was a perfect fit for their location and didn’t require a significant initial investment.
Ellen admitted it wasn’t smooth sailing in the beginning because they didn’t have any idea of how to raise ducklings. But this didn’t stop them from moving forward and educating themselves. “Kaya nagresearch kami. Nanood kami ng videos tungkol sa pag-iitikan,” she recalled.
Determined to succeed, Ellen realized that they needed to be very hands-on when managing and caring for their ducklings. “Doon namin nalaman na mas maganda kung ikaw mismo ang nagpapalaki ng iyong seho para gawing inahin. Para masigurado mo ang kanilang edad pati ang kanilang kalusugan,” she said.
From one duck house, Ellen was able to expand her business to a much bigger place and with more ducks. Ellen said ducks usually start laying eggs at 5 months, meaning you can start earning a profit from the eggs at that point. To ensure high egg production, you need to keep your ducks healthy and away from sickness. “Kailangan araw-araw obserbahan ang mga kilos ng ating mga itik,” she said.
Advice to aspiring duck farm owners
If you’re interested in duck farming, Ellen shares a few tips. Her first advice is to be patient. “Kailangan may pasensya ka sa una kasi matagal-tagal ang returns ng iyong puhunan,” she explained.
Next, always give the best care for your ducks and ducklings because they are your source of livelihood. Give them the best nutrition you can offer so you’ll have higher egg production and better quality eggs. Third, Ellen said, is to always learn and seek the opinion of experts and professionals.
