Starting a new life abroad can be both exciting and daunting. But for some, the adventure does not stop there; they take it one step further and decide to start their own business. Just like AJ Dee, who decided to leave his 13-year career in showbiz to move to Norway to start a new life with his family. His path was not easy, but he has now found success with his men’s clothing business.
It can be recalled that AJ, the brother of actor Enchong Dee, was in the showbiz industry for 13 years. He was in ABS-CBN’s shows such as “Moon of Desire,” “Pasión de Amor,” and more; his last stint was in “Tubig at Langis.” But he decided to leave it all behind to follow his family in Norway in 2016.
Since then, AJ has been living a quiet life with his Norwegian-Filipina wife and children in Oslo, Norway. In a report by Marco Camas for ABS-CBN’s The Filipino Channel, the former actor shared his journey. Navigating the new chapter in his life in Norway was not easy, but he was determined. He started learning the language and began venturing into small businesses. He even started by making and selling longganisa.
“We were selling longganisa. To be honest, we literally made longganisa with our hands and us three. So, tatlo kaming partners doon,” he recalled. [At the time, there were three of us.]
But soon he took a turn and pursued his true interest, which turned into a business. AJ has always been into fashion, and this fueled him to venture into the men’s clothing business, St. James Oslo. You can see AJ wearing some of their customized suits and other men’s garments on his Facebook page, The Filo Dapper.
According to AJ, their business is “made to measure” and they offer “an exclusive and personal experience” with their clients to guide and give them the right garment they are looking for. He said, “I’m very proud to offer our craftsmanship.”
“Filipinos are not known for making suits, but this one, I’m pretty sure, this would offer something more special than what you see in the market here in Oslo,” he added.
There have been many successful Filipino entrepreneurs who found success in fashion and clothing abroad. Take, for instance, Michael Cinco, who pursued his passion and built an international name while in Dubai. If you’re starting a new life abroad or looking for a spark in your life, you can look into your passion and try to turn it into a business. It can be difficult, but taking on this journey can be incredibly rewarding. Good luck!
