Filipinos are the World’s Heaviest Internet Users

With 76 million internet users spending an average of 10 hours and 2 minutes a day online, Filipinos takes on the top spot as the nation that spends the most time using the internet in any device, in We Are Social and Hootsuite’s Digital 2019 Report.

Brazil placed at the second spot, spending an average of 9 hours and 29 minutes; and Thailand, at 9 hours and 11 minutes.

The Digital 2019 report showed that Filipinos spend an average of 4 hours and 58 minutes per day online using mobile internet while those who use internet on laptop, desktop and/or tablet computers spend 5 hours and 4 minutes, on the average.

Filipinos are also the world’s number one when it comes to spending time on social media, at four hours and 12 minutes on a daily average. Two million Filipinos have joined Facebook since October 2018. The report noted that the females are the most dominant Twitter users, at 63 percent, and Instagram, at 64 percent.

Brazil also grabbed the second spot, spending a daily average of 3 hours and 34 minutes on social media. The third spot goes to Colombia, with its citizen spending 3 hours and 31 minutes a day on social media.

Social media penetration in the country grew by 13 percent since January 2018. The report also revealed that 79 million Filipinos, or 71 percent of the total population, aged 13 and older are on social media. This is above the worldwide average of 45 percent.

Internet connection speed

With all these online activities, the Philippines only has an average fixed internet connection speed of only 19 mbps, way below the world average of 54.3 mbps. The average mobile internet connection speed in the country is only 15mbps, also behind the world average speed on 25.1 mbps.

Google, YouTube, and Facebook are the world’s most visited websites, based on global websites traffic, number of visitors, and total page views.
