Genette builds her dream in Canada

Born in Daraga, Albay, Genette finished her education in Bicol University. Then, she flew to Canada in 2007 where she started to work as a caregiver. She shared with The Filipino Channel (TFC) that the earning she received was only enough for her family’s needs in the Philippines.

Despite barely having enough, Genette couldn’t give up on her love for fashion. She admitted that she has always dreamed of becoming a fashion designer. So, she loves going to thrift shops and scouting for vintage clothes that she can re-style.

She said, “Hahanapin ko iyon isa-isa yung mga branded, na outdated, na sale.In the end, ire-restyle ko siya para, at least, meron akong magandang panglabas [na damit].”

At the age of 50, the fashionista finally had the courage to take a brave step towards her big dream. She loaned money to pay for fashion school. On her Facebook, Genette said she studied at the Visual College of Art and Design in Vancouver.

In a post, she proudly shared her achievement, “I had an opportunity to study here, why not grab it, right? And I know I can make it. If others can, why can’t I?”

While pursuing fashion school, Genette became a working student. She continued her caregiving job in the morning and attended her classes in the afternoon. All her hardwork finally paid off when she launched her clothing brand.

Genette’s designs were used in magazine photoshoots as she worked with famous photographers and make-up artists. She was even tapped to become a designer of some candidates of the Binibining Pilipinas International Canada.

While Canada-based, Genette still has the heart of a Filipina as her designs are mainly inspired by Filipiniana.

Words of advice

Genette wants her story to become a motivation for those who still have fears of achieving their dreams in life. Her advice is for us to take chances and not be afraid to face risks, especially about things we are truly passionate about. She said, “Kung anuman yung mga bagay na they’re passionate with, huwag silang matakot. Just to do it, dahil malay mo, you’re better than them.”

Genette thanked all those who expressed their support for her and wrote, “Thank you all for the support and I hope to inspire more people and many aspiring artists and Filipino Designers all around the globe!”
