Many entrepreneurs today recognize the numerous benefits of starting their businesses outside of major metropolitan areas. Among these benefits are lower operating costs, more access to talent and resources, fewer competitors, and so on. Sometimes, it may even have fewer local government restrictions, allowing you more freedom to develop your own business strategies.
Glaiza De Castro decided to build her businesses in the vibrant coastal town of Baler, Aurora. Baler is a popular surfing destination and a great place to start a business due to the large number of local and international tourists. The community is also close to Glaiza’s heart because, as she said earlier, staying in Baler during the quarantine period lessened her anxiety.
Together with her Irish businessman husband, David Rainey, they opened a coffee shop named “Brewbox Baler Cafe.” They also recently opened the doors to their bed and breakfast named “Casa Galura.”
When asked why she wanted to open a business in faraway Baler, she said it reminded her of fond childhood memories. In a Facebook post, she wrote, “Ang daming nagtatanong kung bakit sa Baler ko piniling mag invest. Siguro dahil ni re-remind niya ako ng childhood ko at noong mga panahon na nakakapag reunion kaming pamilya. Nakaka-miss lang.” [Many people asked me why I chose to invest in Baler. Maybe because it reminds me of happy childhood memories of our families getting together for a reunion. I miss those times.]
That’s why Glaiza hopes her bed and breakfast will enable more families and friends to create their own fun memories. “At masaya kaming maging parte nun,” she added. [We would want to be part of those memories.]
Even more touching is the fact that Casa Galura is a promise made to her grandmother and grandfather, who have already passed away. Glaiza apologized to her lolo and lola that it took her a while to build a house with a swimming pool, but she hopes they are proud of her. “Para sa inyo ‘to,” she wrote. [This is for you.]
Meanwhile, Brewbox Baler Cafe offers a wide variety of baked goods, including pastries, cookies, and more, in addition to their usual fare of coffee, bread, and pancakes. According to an Instagram post, Glaiza explained that she’s been working on their cafe since early 2021.
Starting a real estate business appears to be a growing trend among celebrities these days. Like Joross Gamboa’s beachfront property, Susan Enriquez’s farm resort, and others. This is most likely because it is much easier to manage than other businesses, such as a food business. Although it requires more capital, it has the potential to generate more revenue.
