Globe’s Data Breach Affects 8K Prepaid Subscribers

Some 8,851 Globe subscribers who registered for free entertainment and concert tickets are affected by a data breach, the telecom company said.

According to Globe, an error in the system caused it to send data registration confirmation receipt containing the subscribers’ personal information to the wrong individual. The affected customers’ were among those registered last Friday for the ‘On The List’ promo after receiving an SMS telling them that they can avail of free tickets to the concert of the Korean pop group, Blackpink.

Upon successful registration, the customer shall receive a copy of the information they provided on the site.

However, a number of promo registrants reported receiving a set of personal information that belongs to a different person.

After receiving such reports, Globe has immediately taken down the registration site and disabled access of would-be registrants.

In a statement, the telecommunications giant said that it already rectified the issue with the affected customers. Furthermore, Globe stated that what happened was just a case of sending the data confirmation receipt to the wrong individual and was not sent as a group of data.

NPC Commissioner Raymond Liboro said that the agency was already validating the report and verifies the information provided by the company.

He advised those who were affected by the data breach to take a precautionary measure and continuously monitor their online and offline accounts for any unusual activities. Liboro also asked them to consider changing their passwords and other means of identity verification and be on the lookout for possible phishing attempts and other online risks.
