Homemade Turmeric Powder, a Healthy and Lucrative Business Idea

As the pandemic continues, more people are becoming conscious of their health. Many are looking for healthier options and supplements that will help boost their immunity to fight off illness. For businessman Jomar David of Nutridelight his turmeric business took off amid the pandemic.

When he started his homemade turmeric business in 2012, Jomar had to explain the health benefits of turmeric or “luyang dilaw” to the public. Many were still uninformed about turmeric’s health benefits. Jomar recalled how he would visit offices and residences, trying to convince people to give the turmeric a try.

“Naglalako po ako sa mga opisina, sa city hall,” Jomar shared on GMA’s Pera Paraan.

But all that changed when the pandemic came. People started getting interested in turmeric and his business was slowly taking off. “Dahil sa pandemic, yung product po natin nakapagfocus po tayo,” Jomar said.

Soon, Jomar was able to transform an old dumpsite into a warehouse and processing place for his turmeric business. With his success, he’s now earning over P10,000 to P20,000 a week.

Turmeric is known to be a “superfood” for its antioxidant and medicinal properties. This medicinal herb’s anti-inflammatory compound has been linked to helping reduce the risk for heart disease, cancer, Alzheimer’s disease, and other degenerative illnesses. It can even help fight off depression and aid in better digestion.

How to make homemade turmeric powder

First, remove the dirt from the turmeric. Cut in lengthwise as thinly as you can. The thinner slices you make, the easier the turmeric gets dried and easier to process. Next, place it on a food dehydrator at 70 degrees Celcius for 6 hours. When you don’t have a dehydrator, you can put it in a food strainer. It’s better to use a container with holes or a strainer so the air easily dries the turmeric slices. Cover it with a paper bag and dry it out in the direct sun.

Once turmeric is all dried out. Place it on a food processor and strain to remove the hard part of the turmeric. Keeping the skin has additional benefits and it keeps the turmeric’s natural aroma and color. You can serve it by adding to food or refreshments such as tea or juice.
