It looks like Jollibee’s Chickenjoy has brought “bida ang saya” to the United States! It was named Eater’s Best Fried Chicken in America.
According to Eater, Pinoys favorite Chickenjoy has made its way to the hearts and the tummies of their American staff as it was chosen as their best fried chicken.
Eater.com is an international food website under Vox Media. The staff tested 16 fried chickens available in the US, and Jollibee’s Chickenjoy reigned supreme. It defeated the other 15 contenders in the Bones and Bones vs. Sauced categories. Other big names that Jollibee’s Chickenjoy beat to the test were McDonald’s, KFC, Popeyes, Burger King, Wendy’s, Wingstop, Shake Shack, Panda Express, and more.
The fried chicken brands were categorized based on Bones, No Bones, Sandwiched and Sauced.
Eater described Jollibee as a Filipino fried chicken chain that has “since developed a cult following for its chickenjoy, what the chain calls its bone-in fried chicken.” The meat-topped spaghetti was also mentioned as one of the fast-food top offerings.
The final match was between Jollibee’s Chickenjoy and South Korea’s Bonchon half-and-half. Eater’s special projects editor, Lesley Suter, made the final decision.
Suter chose Jollibee’s Chickenjoy for the win! According to her, the chicken was “satisfyingly light, flavorful in a ‘tastes like chicken’ sort of way, and supremely moist.”
She added that the crispy chicken skin was “subtly seasoned skin is as tectonically crunchy as advertised if loosely attached in such a way as to be able to slide off an entire hunk with one bite.”
Suter admitted that she wasn’t a big fan of Jollibee’s signature gravy initially as it was very reflective of Filipino’s love for anything sweet. She admitted it was “unremarkable bordering on weird” when tasted on its own. However, when slathered on the Chickenjoy, the gravy surprised her.
“The sweetish gravy brings out a whole other realm of flavor — bright, tangy, rich. It’s the chicken’s perfect complement,” she remarked.
Suter said that as the ultimate victor, the Jollibee Chickenjoy will now be a new staple in their home. What a way to celebrate one of Pinoys favorite comfort foods! Now, it has moved to Americans’ homes too.
On Facebook, Jollibee stated that they felt honored with the recognition. It posted, “Our very own crispylicious, juicylicious, best-tasting Chickenjoy is named the ‘best fried Chicken in America’ by global food website Eater.com. Proud and honored to spread JOY to the rest of the world!”
Jollibee continues to expand in the Philippines and across the globe. As of 2022, it now has 84 locations across North America. It will invade the “Big Apple” too, as the company plans to open in Times Square, New York.
