Bay Area Dragons import and five-year NBA veteran Andrew Nicholson feels right at home in the Philippines. Much of it is because of his love for Filipino foods!
The Canadian basketball star even turned his love for Filipino food into lucrative businesses. Nicholson owns 2 Filipino restaurants in Canada.
He has investments in The Crane Kitchen, which offers Filipino food and kamayan platters, and The Crane Express Dessert and Bar, where halo-halo is a specialty. On top of that, he confirmed in an article on Philstar, that he’s also a distributor of liquor Tanduay in Toronto. He used to also invest in homegrown Max Fried Chicken, before launching his own restaurants.
The Toronto-based big man has admitted how much he loves Pinoy food. He said in an article on Spin, “(Filipino food is) amazing..Pancit canton is my favorite. I love beef sisig, I love all that stuff.”
On his Instagram account, he even shows how to make their special ube halo-halo.
And it’s not just the food he loves, but the culture, the country, even the hot weather!
“Absolutely. I’ve been to the Philippines a couple times before. I really love the country. I love the culture. I love everything about it. It’s nice here, the food’s great. It’s a very good climate, so I’m just happy to be here,” he added.
Nicholson has been flying in and out of the Philippines in the past few months as he led the Dragons in the PBA guest stint in the Commissioner’s Cup. He said the Philippines is a great country and is thrilled to be part of the PBA.
“I’ve been over many times. I’m looking forward to playing in the PBA and it’s great to be part of it,” he said.
He shared that Filipinos have always been close to his heart even way back. He used to study high school at a catholic school which was predominantly Filipino, the Father Michael Goetz. His close friend and business partner is a Filipino named Clyde Pacis.
Filipino restaurants have been making waves in different countries abroad. ‘Kasama’, a Filipino restaurant in Chicago has earned its first prestigious Michelin star. Even Pinoy desserts such as sorbetes became a huge hit in Belgium.
