When their accounting firm encountered problems during the pandemic, one mom opened a special taho business with a Php7,000 capital. Amazingly, the business now earns around Php15,000 a month.
Opening a Special Taho Business
This sweet, yummy food would soon become a source of income for Miriam De Guzman-Calimutan. She explained that the accounting firm of her husband, Al Calimutan, experienced difficulties during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Yet the lockdown would soon bring them inspiration to do business when they craved for taho but selling streetfood wasn’t allowed at the time. There were no taho vendors peddling in the streets.
So, Miriam used her mom’s taho recipe to make some for their family. However, it failed. Instead of taho, it turned into tokwa (tofu) because of an incorrect measurement.
Still, the seeds of the business were planted in her brain by then. She researched through trial and error until she found the perfect recipe. The family loved it!
With Php7,000 capital, they began making and selling their product.
“Nag-research ako, kabila’t-kanan trial and error hanggang sa makuha ko ‘yung tamang lasa at consistency…Pumatok siya una sa panlasa ng pamilya ko. Then, I started selling it muna sa village namin,” Miriam explained.
“It was a big hit. Nakita ko ‘yung kinasabikan ng tao sa taho, and that makes me more aggressive to sell it outside the neighborhood. Ang social media ang avenue ko to sell my taho.”
They sell classic taho in mini buckets:
- 1 Liter costs Php250
- 5 Liter costs Php400
They also experimented with other flavors, including coffee and strawberry they sold at a higher rate, and offered options for extra sago or arnibal.
It turned out to be a good decision because the family now earns Php15,000 a month from this business.
“Huwag matakot sumubok. It will start with a vision, eh. Dapat meron niyan. Then, lagyan mo ng passion ang kahit na anong trabaho mo. Kailangan may dedication at commitment ka sa ginagawa mo,” she advised.
“Patuloy kang mag-aral. Huwag matakot magkamali because it’s part of the process. At higit sa lahat, magtiwala sa Diyos na gagabayan tayo at tutulungan magtagumpay.”
