Ron Jan Rubia used to work from 8:00 AM to 6:00 PM as an IT engineer in Ortigas. But he quit his job and found success in selling siomai to pursue his dream of owning his own business.

In an interview on OneTV’s show Chink Positive with Chinkee Tan, Rubia said that he was earning a decent salary, but he felt like he was not reaching his full potential. He also wanted to have more control over his time.

“Gusto ko kasi yung talagang hawak ko yung oras ko para the more na mas masarap mag-harvest sa sarili mong oras,” he said. [I’d like to have more control over my time. It’s satisfying to “harvest” from your own time.]

Rubia said being an employee wasn’t helping him achieve his dreams. So, with P20,000 in initial capital, he and his partner decided to start a food business. They chose to sell siomai because it is a popular and affordable food item. They started with a small cart, but they were able to grow their business quickly.

Rubia now sells an average of PHP5,000 worth of siomai per day. He said that he is happy with his decision to quit his job and pursue his dream.

When asked about his “diskarte,” Rubia said he isn’t embarrassed to call passersby to try his siomai. He also makes TikTok videos to promote his business. Rubia explained how TikTok marketing helps his business so much. He said that almost 50% of his customers are those who wanted to try his siomai after seeing his viral videos. “Sobrang laking impact,” Rubia explained on how TikTok helped his business. [It made such a huge impact.]

Rubia’s story is an inspiration to anyone who is thinking about starting their own business. It shows that it is possible to achieve success, even if you are starting from scratch.
