Who would have thought that a floor sweeper in a parlor would someday own the biggest and most successful chain of hair salons in the country?
Dubbed as the “mother” of all entrepreneurs, Ricky Reyes used his savings from sweeping floors to establish his first salon in San Juan in 1973. His first salon was simple, consisting of a shampoo chair, a bowl, a dryer and a mirror. But in a matter of two years, Reyes was able to open three more on Legarda, Bluementritt and Taft Avenue.
It was in 1985 that Reyes’ salon business made its mark in the local beauty industry after he opened his first mall-based salon at SM North EDSA.
Through the years, Reyes’ salon business kept getting better as the company brought in the latest trends in beauty and hair. The beauty tycoon put all efforts to bring in the best technology for digital perm, milk rebonding, hair shine, hair reborn, hair detox, eyelash extension and several others. By 2010, Reyes has over 44 Gandang Ricky Reyes salons.
Reyes, who is also known for his philantrophic works, spends most of his time “mothering” his beauty empire both in Metro Manila and in the provinces. He even shares his blessings with his employees, who get to enjoy a housing facility for each salon branch.
Unlike other entrepreneurs, Reyes admitted that he doesn’t believe in return of investment when it comes to employees. He shared that he is proud of the fact that most of the hairdressers in the Philippines all started with him.
“I love my business and I want people to discover that love for work, to do something they can earn from but are happy doing. I know what it feels like to be at the bottom of the wheel, and I take pleasure in helping those who want to help themselves,” he told PhilStar.
