Viral Ice Seller ‘Miss Yelo’ Earns Php90k a Month

A young lady who goes by the name ‘Miss Yelo’ is taking social media by storm with her unique ‘yelo’ concept and adorable vlogs. It’s like hitting two birds (well, perhaps many birds) with one stone.

Unique Business Concept for Selling Ice

‘Miss Yelo’ or Jodielyn Santos Ugalde in real life, has become a sort of internet sensation, gaining thousands of followers on her page. But what really sets her apart from the others is that she’s selling ice – and already earning as much as Php90,000 a month.

The ice business is certainly one of the most common in the Philippines, especially considering that we live in a tropical country and many households don’t have their own refrigerators.

And while everyone is likely to earn some money if they sell ice (also known locally as ‘yelo’), the challenge is how you can stand out from the hundreds of competition and actually earn serious money in this business.

For Miss Yelo and her family, the answer comes in creating a ‘pregnant’ ice ball that’s shaped differently than the traditional semi-cylindrical ice packs.

Everyone in the family helps out in the business and are the ones that pack the ice. They also a lot of time creating the unique ‘yelo’ pack.

The family revealed their secret to making the ice in this manner – by filling the plastic pack halfway, then shaping and pushing the pack until the plastic becomes round. Then, they fill it up near the brim and tie it tightly.

Most of their customers are shops or stalls at the market. Some of these customers mentioned in the video that they like buying from Miss Yelo because their ice products are cheaper yet still last longer than the competition. Cool, isn’t it?

Becoming ‘Miss Yelo’

Ugalde shared that they were already selling ice and already growing their clientele when people began calling her ‘Miss Yelo’ – and she later accepted the moniker and created the social media account which she now uses to vlog and also share more about her booming ice business.
