Pursue a Science and Technology Career through Scholarship Grants from the DOST

The Philippine Department of Science and Technology (DOST), through the Science Education Institute (SEI), offers scholarship grants to needy but deserving students who wish to take an undergraduate and graduate course related to Science and Technology and, eventually, pursue a career in the said field.

This is in pursuance of the provisions of Republic Act No. 7687, or the ‘Science and Technology Scholarship Act of 1994’.

Meanwhile, the DOST-SEI also offers a Merit Scholarship for students with high aptitude in Science and Mathematics and who are willing to pursue careers in the fields of Science and Technology, regardless of their family’s socio-economic status.

Scholarship grantees must take a course under the priority fields of study such as the Basic Sciences, Engineering, other Applied Sciences, and Science and Mathematics teaching.

Undergraduate Scholarship

An applicant for the DOST-SEI Undergraduate Scholarship must be a natural-born Filipino citizen belonging to a family whose socio-economic status does not exceed the set values of specific indicators. He or she must be a member of the STEM strand senior high school graduating class or must belong to the top five percent of the non-STEM strand senior high school graduating class.

Of good moral character and in good health, the applicant must be a resident of the municipality for the last four years and must pass the scholarship examination.

The applicant must submit two recent 1”x1” pictures, a photocopy of Birth Certificate, parent/s tax documents of Certificate of Indigency, the electric bill for three consecutive months, along with the properly filled-up application forms.

Junior Level Science Scholarship

This scholarship is granted to incoming third-year college students pursuing degree programs in the areas of Science and Technology. The qualifications for this scholarship grant is the same with that of the Undergraduate Scholarship, but it requires that the applicant must have a general weighted average of at least 83 percent or its equivalent in his/her first and second years in college.

Graduate Scholarship

The DOST-SEI offers four different types of scholarship for graduate students. To qualify for these scholarship programs, an applicant must be a Filipino citizen not more than 45 years old at the time of application, in good health, and does not have a criminal or administrative case.

The Accelerated Science and Technology Human Resource Development Program-National Science Consortium (ASTHRDP-NSC) provides master’s and doctoral degrees in priority Science and Technology areas to accelerate the production of high-level human resources needed for research and development in Science and Technology.

Scholars under this program must be able to write a thesis or dissertation on the areas of Climate Change and Disaster Preparedness; Materials Science and Nanotechnology; and Natural Products and Drug Development.

An applicant must pass the admission requirements for graduate studies, interview, and other screening procedures to qualify for this scholarship grant.

Meanwhile, the Capacity Building Program in Science and Mathematics Education aims to develop a pool of experts in Science and Mathematics education. To qualify, an applicant must have teaching experience and is allowed to study full-time for two or three years, if employed.

On the other hand, the Engineering Research and Development for Technology provides master’s and doctoral degrees in various engineering fields to upgrade the qualifications of practicing engineers in the country. Those who have a bachelor or master’s degree in engineering or a related field are eligible to apply for this scholarship.

Lastly, the Foreign Graduate Scholarship Program offers master’s and doctoral degrees in specialized priority fields in Science and Technology to upgrade the country’s research and technological innovation capabilities. Those who will qualify for this grant must be willing to render the required service obligation equivalent to the length of time the scholar enjoyed the scholarship.
