An engineering graduate who bravely risked switching careers shares her motivational business journey. Danica Lynne Casta put down her hard hat as an engineer to become a full-time baker, trading the construction site for the kitchen.
In a report from the Philippine Star, Danica Lynne shared that she graduated from MAPUA University with a degree in Bachelor of Science in Construction Engineering & Management. But instead of pursuing her profession, Danica Lynne opened an online cake business named “Amberlyns Cake.”
When the pandemic happened, Danica Lynne found herself reevaluating her career plans. Like many Pinoys, Danica Lynne and her family faced financial problems. To help her family, Danica Lynne decided to look for a temporary online job. With the little savings she had, she bought an oven and started baking. Little did she know that the small step would become the beginning of a big change in her life!
She said, “Lockdown tapos kaka-graduate ko. Hindi ko alam kung pa’no ako mag-i-start. ‘Yung naipon ko do’n sa last kong salary, pinangbili ko siya ng oven na maliit. Ginawan ko ng cake ‘yung pamangkin ko and then do’n na nag-start.”
Danica Lynne admitted she only had a little background in baking. But she made up for what she lacked with hard work! She didn’t give up and learned ways to improve her baking skills. Her bento cakes quickly gained popularity. Aside from their delicious taste, the bento cakes were affordable and just the perfect size for those on a budget.
She recalled that she earned her first-digit profit in just a month of baking. That was when she realized that being a full-time baker was meant for her. “Sinabi ko sa sarili ko na magre-resign na ako at magiging full-time baker na lang ako,” she said.
Danica Lynne shares that she now averages over 1,000 orders a month. This also means a 6-digit income for her! From being the only baker, Danica Lynne now has 8 employees who assist her with the orders.
Looking back, Danica Lynne admitted that she still couldn’t believe that she is now a baker instead of an engineer. But she has no regrets at all. “Hindi ko talaga naisip na magiging baker ako kasi suntok sa buwan lang yung sa lockdown, tapos biglang nahilig ako sa pagbake. Then, ganito na and nangyari, may business na ako,” she shared.
Life sure has a funny way of redirecting us to a different path in life. Leaving our comfort zones can lead to exciting and better adventures for us, just like the teachers who gave up teaching to open a taho shop and the school nurse who now runs a tapsilog business.
