Roy Villegas is now very far from the life he grew up living in the streets. From picking up garbage to sell, he is now a successful businessman.
From a capital of P10,000, he successfully grew this into six burger joints and is now earning P300,000 monthly. Roy has built his dream house, bought cars, and now lives a comfortable life.
Roy was quoted on Pep recalling how he used to do odd jobs while growing up in Calamba, Laguna. “So dati kasi, may barkada ako, yung best friend ko si JC. Kung anu-ano ang ginagawa namin. Minsan, nag-aalok kami ng linis-puntod. Kahit ano basta magkaroon lang ng pagkakakitaan,” he said.
“Kasi nasa kalsada kami, e. Bale choice na namin na tumira sa kalsada,” he added.
When he reached college, he used his skills and became a part of the basketball varsity to get into a university. When he graduated, he became a basketball coach in different schools.
Despite having a stable job, Roy still wished to be able to build his own business. He admitted that his dreams wouldn’t be easy to achieve if he relied on his coaching job.
He decided to finally take the risk into business when his wife gave birth. They had P10,000 left from their savings. He decided to use it to build a burger shop and called it Uncle Roy’s Burger.
Roy soon learned how difficult it is to start a business. For three months, he barely had any profit.
“Three months iyon lugi, e. So, walang bumibili. So, parang nalulugi pa ako ng PHP 2,000 a month,” he recalled.
But he was determined to succeed, so he continued and persevered. Finally, his hardwork paid off. Roy expanded his business to six branches and earned more than he ever expected. Roy was able to fulfill his dreams.
He said, “Dati wala kang bahay and yun talaga yung finorsee ko, yun ang number one dream ko talaga, e, magkaroon ng sariling bahay. Nagkaroon tayo ng mga kotse, at kung anu-ano.”
Advice To Aspiring Entrepreneurs
According to Roy, it’s true that you need to take risks in business, but you also shouldn’t blindly take them. He said to always think things over and not to give up easily.
He said, “If meron kayong naiisip, do a calculated risk. Never back down. Lagi mong piliin na maniwala sa sarili mo, at eventually yung hard work mo, with honesty, magbubunga iyan, no matter what.”
