Everyone in the Philippines knows Jose Mari Chan, dubbed as the “King of Christmas” or “Mr. Christmas.”
He’s the subject of numerous Christmas memes, with people joking that he’s hanging out all year with his guitar, waiting for September 1 so he can start singing “Christmas in Our Hearts.”
But while he’s, indeed, the face of Christmas in the Philippines, not too many people know that he’s also a successful businessman outside the holiday season.
Jose Mari Chan’s Businesses
For the crooner, music is really just a hobby – it’s his businesses that make him more money. He told ABS-CBN News that that his businesses support his family.
“Many people don’t know that music is just my hobby. I have a business. I’m in the sugar business,” Chan explained.
He owns both the A. Chan Sugar Corporation (a sugar trader based in Makati City) and the Binalbagan-Isabela Sugar Company Inc. (BISCOM, a sugar producer with 28,725 hectares of total sugarcane area based in Negros Occidental, central Philippines).
“And that’s what keeps me going and that’s what supports my family. I’m in the sugar business that I inherited from my father. I’m running the business even until now,” he added.
But he’s not just into the sugar business.
Although he describes the venture as “small,” many netizens were impressed to know that he’s also into the real estate business. He owns and manages this business along with his two daughters.
Chan serves as president of Morning Glow Development Corporation whose projects include the Villa Magdalena Commercial Center (a shopping center in Bacolod City) and the seven-hectare village named Villa Florencia Subdivision (also in Bacolod).
How is the Sugar Industry in the Philippines?
The sugar industry is big in the Philippines, with a national GDP (gross domestic product) of around Php69.7 billion each year.
Chan’s BISCOM is one of the 13 mills located on Negros island and contributes around 8.64% of the country’s sugar production.
